Emergency Contraception Types:

• Emergency Contraceptive Levonorgestrel Pills (Plan B, Take Action, My Way, Option 2, Preventeza, AfterPill, My Choice, Aftera, EContra, etc): Available for purchase over the counter at drugstores or pharmacies without a prescription by those 17 or older.

  • The pill should be taken within 24-72 hours of unprotected sex for it to be effective. Different pills will specify different time periods, so be sure to read the pill instructions and information carefully.

  • Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): Available with doctor prescription

    • IUDs can be installed up to 5 days after unprotected sex/ovulation to prevent pregnancy.

    • IUDs must be fitted by a qualified healthcare professional. Local medical centers and clinics often provide IUD-fitting services.

  • If Plan B fails, Plan C (abortion by pill) is also an option. There are many services that will deliver to your house discreetly.

• Repeal Parental Notice of Abortion (PNA): As of June 1, 2022, minors are no longer required to contact an adult family member 48 hours before receiving an abortion.The law creates a judicial bypass for those who cannot notify an adult family member.

• Reproductive Health Act (RHA): establishes the fundamental right to reproductive health which includes the right to use/refuse contraception and the right to continue a pregnancy and give birth or have an abortion. This act regulates abortion just like any other form of healthcare, meaning that abortion be covered under health insurance. Additionally, abortion is still made available even if the fetus is able to survive outside of the womb if there is a significant health risk to the carrier.

• HB135: pharmacists are allowed to dispense hormonal contraception without a prescription. This also means that there is no age restriction on purchasing contraceptives; minors are able to buy over-the-counter contraception legally (as long as you are over 12, then you don’t need to purchase with a parent).

I’m a doctor, can I get my license taken away for performing an abortion on

• This year, the House passed HB1464 that would protect healthcare providers from losing their Illinois license if their license is revoked in another state for providing an abortion. This bill is currently awaiting action from the Senate.

    • Deciding to use or refuse contraception (birth control) or sterilization. 

    • Deciding what type of birth control to use, if any.

    • If pregnant, deciding whether to give birth or have an abortion.

    • When giving birth, making decisions like whether to have an induction, epidural anesthesia, or cesarean surgery.

• Providers in Illinois must follow clinical guidelines that require that physicians only perform abortions before viability, unless the pregnancy presents a risk to the mother/patient’s health after viability. These restrictions are determined by individual providers’ professional opinion.
